The strains in the coalition are already showing because of this looming deadline. This can be converted into a great opportunity for Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh to display statesmanship of the type that can kill two birds with one stone. By letting Sayid continue as the Chief Minister, the Congress can generate tremendous amount of goodwill in the valley. Just as Sonia Gandhi’s renunciation of 2004 dramatically raised her stature without affecting her power position, another renunciation can go a long way towards resolving the valley’s political problems.
